The R4i Gold SDHC card is considered as the best R4 3DS card on the market with its backward compatibility and top reliability. This can work with all consoles because it was designed to work with R4 DSi and the consoles manufactured before this. This card is manufactured by r4i-sdhc.com and is developed to be robust, reliable and simple to use. This is even more superior to TT cards and Acekards. There are many R4 3DS card imitators which released their cards to work with Nintendo DS, DSi, DS Lite and DSi XL.
It is best to buy and R4i 3DS card over any other R4 cards on the market due to its backward compatibility with all Nintendo DS consoles. This is a good recommendation to all the players who are still about to buy a new R4 card. Moreover, the R4i card can still be used even if you would like to upgrade your console to Nintendo 3DS, DSi or DSi XL. This can save you the money that you would have needed to buy another R4 card.

Q: Can R4 3DS play 3DS roms?
A: Updated: YES - Gateway 3DS is the first card that can finally play 3DS roms on the 3DS from a file stored on a microSD card. You can now download 3DS games from torrents or any rom site and after copying them to an SD card play them on the console with a Gateway3DS adapter!
The outdated answer for before 2013 was A: No - While they are compatible with Nintendo 3DS at this time the cards can be used to play DS / DSi ROMs, Homebrew games, DOS games like Doom and Qauke, PC Adventure games and older emulated video game console roms. Playing 3DS Games from a R4 card is something that we all look forward to and there has been some progress in decoding the game encryption this year. Expect some good news to come in 2013!
Q: Can R4 3DS play GBA games?
A: Yes on DS / DSi (with the help of a EZ-Flash 3-in-1 Expansion Pack) - NO on 3DS.
If you have a R43DS card and want to use it to play Gameboy Advance games you can do it on the older DS or DSi systems, but you will also need an Expansion Pack that plugs into the GBA slot of these handhelds. GBA on 3DS will come only when the console is fully unlocked and maybe after a custom firmware is released.
Q: Could I get banned from online games? Can R4 brick your 3DS
A: NO*. Nintendo did ban some users who cheated on Mariokart using Action Reply cheat devices, but so far there has been no information of banning from Nintendo Network because an R4 card was detected. New firmware updates try to lock out the use of flash cards and backup devices, but if you upgrade the cards firmware before updating the console you will have a card that works. And Nintendo can not remotely brick any devices you own. If after an update a rom card is detected all they do is display a warning that an Error has occurred (that is if you forgot to download and copy the latest firmware update on the R4card before updating 3DS). And that can be fixed by upgrading the R43DS on another console or an older DS.
Q: Can I buy R4 Gold 3DS on Amazon or eBay?
A: For a long time you could, but after Nintendo figured out who the biggest sellers of their hated R4 cards are (eBay and Amazon) they called upon their lawyers to force the both big online markets to ban the sale or these backup cards if they want to continue selling Nintendo products and so they complied.
Now the best place to get a flash card is to buy from R4Shop »
Q: What type of SD card do I need?
A: What you need is a microSD card. The bigger the better, so micro SDHC up to 32GB can be used, but to get the best performance and avoid any lag when loading the game a card with a speed rating of CLASS6 or better is highly suggested (You know the little circle with the number on the cards - look for (6) or (10)). CLASS2 and CLASS4 cards do work and are cheaper, but spending a couple of dollars will save you a lot of frustration. If even just copying games from PC to microSD card the Class 6 card will work x3 times faster, so instead of waiting say 10 minutes you could already be playing in 3! And the same with in game level loading. The brand of the SD card does not matter too much these days, and you can buy the cheapest from the big and fast ones, or just get a bundle deal where a tested working Memory Card is already included in the package with the cartridge.
